Advanced Medical Optics Inc. said Wednesday that the Food and Drug Administration approved its Tecnis intraocular lens for cataract patients.
Tecnis is a foldable acrylic replacement lens.
Santa Ana-based Advanced Medical said the regulatory OK was a milestone for the company because the lens was developed using technology from its $450 million buy of Pfizer Inc.’s ophthalmic surgery business as well as in-house lens technology.
Advanced Medical said it planned to start selling Tecnis in the U.S. and Europe in September.
Shares of the eye surgery and contact lens company were up 0.5% to $40 in trading on Wednesday.
