About 550 supporters of the planned redevelopment of the former El Toro Marine base as the Great Park partied at a fundraiser last month. The Great Park Conservancy, which is raising money to turn the base into parks, museums and others venues, hosted the gourmet dinner, auction and presentation of plans for a garden. The garden stands to be the first permanent project at the Great Park, where redevelopment is set to play out over many years. The dinner was held in a former hangar at the onetime base with dancing on a nearby tarmac. Event supporters included Lennar Corp., which plans to develop homes and commercial space at the former base, and Michael Ray, partner in retail real estate developer Sanderson J. Ray Development Corp. in Irvine.
