Disney Expanding Grand Californian Hotel

Walt Disney Co. plans to expand its Grand Californian Hotel & Spa in Anaheim, adding a wing with more than 200 rooms and 50 timeshare condominiums, the company said Tuesday.

The expansion stands to bring the hotel’s rooms to nearly 1,000. That would make the hotel the third-largest in the county, up from No. 4 now.

Plans call for adding 203 rooms and 50 timeshares for Disney Vacation Club members. The timeshares will be the first for Disney on the West Coast.

In all, the hotel will have 998 rooms, surpassing Disneyland Hotel at 990 and behind the Hilton Anaheim and Anaheim Marriott with more than 1,000 rooms each.

The timeshares are set to sell for $16,700, plus annual fees that average $600.

The expansion is expected to finish in late 2009. Disney’s Grand Californian has been operating at or near capacity for the past two years, often exceeding the average occupancy rate for Anaheim (80% July) and Orange County (77% in July).
