On-Line Info

AS EVERYONE KNOWS, I’M FOR THE PROPOSED EL TORO AIRPORT.

But let me give an attaboy to Len Kransner, who operates the anti-airport El Toro Airport Info Site, for doing what the county has chosen not to do on its own El Toro web site: Kranser is putting the county’s draft environmental impact report on-line.

It’s been a mammoth undertaking for Kranser and other anti-airport volunteers. Unlike the county, which could have simply transferred the files from a word processor to its web site, they’ve had to optically scan the report, page by page. So far, they’ve entered about 1,500 pages of text, which leaves them several thousand to go. Kransner says he doubts they’ll get it all done by the March election on Measure F.

“The county could have done this easily. Shame on them,” Kransner said.

County officials wonder what the fuss is about. They note that their site does carry a thorough summary of the EIR (Kranser’s site carries the same summary). For the vast majority of citizens, county officials say, the summary provides all of the information they’ll want about El Toro in a comprehensible way. And county officials say that much of the report makes little sense without the accompanying charts and graphics, which are difficult to download and would jam many computers. (Kransner agrees that many of the graphics are memory-eaters.)

But c’mon guys. Where there’s a will there’s a way, and it would have been a public service to make the entire report, or at least the text portion of it, available on-line for those who want to access it.

Once again, chalk up a PR win for the airport foes.

Getting Clipped

AFTER LOSING THEIR 16TH GAME IN 18 OUTINGS LAST WEEK, THE WOEFUL LA

Clippers replaced their coach for the second time in less than two years. Nearly everybody wants the Clippers to move to Anaheim, fans, players, the league, but not team owner Don Sterling.

But I can see it now: Sterling will change his mind, move the team to Anaheim, then after three more lousy seasons move them to St. Louis and win the NBA title.
