Comment: Not-So-Great Park

Comment: Not-So-Great Park

Comment by Rick Reiff

SOMETIMES A DIRECT QUOTE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS OF EXPLANATION. So I thought it would be edifying to excerpt some quotes from James Sterngold’s July 1 New York Times story about plans for El Toro. They speak for themselves.

& #149; County supervisor Todd Spitzer: “What we all campaigned for was to have a Great Park. But it’s not going to be a great big park. The land use will be driven by the economics.”

& #149; Irvine Mayor Larry Agran: “Well, it’s a development plan with the idea of a Great Park.”

& #149; Los Angeles planning director Con Howe: “It’s not surrounded by dense urban development It’s not an immediate area that is open-space-starved. And it does seem from the get-go they have no natural character there to work with.”

& #149; Irvine city manager Allison Hart: “We want to take a little more time to package this and then it’s rock ‘n’ roll.”
