Comarco Posts Q1 Loss, Decline

Irvine-based Comarco Inc. said Wednesday it’s posted a larger loss and a decline in sales in the first quarter.

The maker of wireless network testing gear and mobile power adapters said its operating loss grew 30% to $1.6 million in the period ended April 30, versus a year earlier. Sales were 12% lower to $8 million.

The company said wireless testing sales dropped 12% to $3.7 million. The company’s ChargeSource power adapter unit saw sales fall 18% to $1.8 million.

One unit is seeing growth: roadside call boxes, with sales rising 52% to $2.4 million in the period.

“For the past several quarters, we have concentrated on rebuilding and refocusing our overall operations so that we would be positioned to capitalize on opportunities that would create future growth,” said Tom Franza, Comarco’s chief executive. “Based on orders negotiated and awarded, we expect to see a strong pick-up in revenue” from its wireless testing and call box units.

In March, Comarco said it was awarded $3.9 million worth of projects by the San Diego Service Authority for Freeway Emergencies.

The company plans to upgrade 1,400 call boxes with digital and text messaging and redo 1,000 call box sites to better serve the disabled under the pact.

Shares of Comarco were up 1.9% to $8 Wednesday.
