Clintons Tap OC Fundraisers; Samueli Appreciates Hallett

Bill Clinton is the featured attraction at a Democratic National Committee fundraiser July 15 at the Anaheim Hills home of Sonya and Ed Grech, the duo behind limo maker Krystal Enterprises in Brea. Loretta Sanchez and Wylie Aitken are the “event hosts.” Please, no cheap shots about “limousine liberals” Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton again slipped into OC last week for a quiet fundraiser, this one at the Lido Isle home of Judy and Joe Rosener. Mrs. Clinton left with $44,000 for her Senate campaign, but also with a reminder that the Orange Coast is still GOP country,Bush for President signs dotted the island’s blocked-off streets. Professor Judy described it as good-natured fun by her Republican neighbors, and she said one of them was even going to ante up $1,000 to meet the First Lady until he got called out of town Taming the wilderness: 100-year-old Arnold Beckman (Star Scout, 1916) and George Argyros were among the VIPs being flown by helicopter this week to Lost Valley Scout Reservation for the dedication of Beckman Hall. It’s part of a $4 million renovation of the remote Boy Scouts camp east of Temecula that includes the installation of phone lines Economic indicator: The Building Industry Association of OC’s annual golf outing last month drew a record 500 participants, up 7% from 1999. You need four golf courses to accommodate that many players The restaurant business is no place for a recently married man, says John Kookootsedes, the personable proprietor of Chanteclair in Irvine who has joined Corbin & Wertz as a corporate development consultant. “I got married last year after being single for the last five years. I don’t want to be working every night, every weekend, every holiday.” Kookootsedes has a degree in finance, but says his biggest asset in the new job is his “unique access” to movers and shakers who are customers of Chanteclair. The restaurant is left in the good hands of dad George Kookootsedes Tech lawyer Bruce Hallett of Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison recently received the 2000 National Human Relations award from the OC chapter of the American Jewish Committee. Along with the honor came an appreciative remark from last year’s winner, Henry Samueli, who credited Hallett with setting up the mechanism that turned two tech whizzes (himself and fellow Broadcom co-founder Henry “Nick” Nicholas) into multi-billionaires. “I didn’t know anything about stock options,” Samueli said. “I would have been happy with a nice salary. Of course, I am very grateful to Bruce.”
