Chapman Provost Outdoes Doti; Exec Job Postings

It’s hard to one-up Chapman U Prez Jim Doti. But Chapman’s new No. 2, Provost Daniele Struppa, tops his boss on a couple of counts. Doti boasts of his Italian heritage. Struppa is a native of Italy. Doti has climbed two of the world’s seven summits (Kilimanjaro and Aconcagua). Struppa has scaled those two plus Mount Elbrus in Russia (which Doti plans to climb this year). Doti’s raised more money, but Struppa is no slacker in that category, either, outpacing all other deans in fund raising at George Mason U. The colleghi are channeling their competitiveness: Doti notes Struppa recruited a Nobel laureate to the GMU faculty and says, “Our goal is for Chapman to eventually have more Nobel laureates on our faculty than UCI has!” UCI leads, 3-0 …

Chapman is hinting, but not guaranteeing, that its Feb. 3 concert will be great for Hollywood stargazing. Carol Channing is performing, and some of the Broadway legend’s pals may be in the audience, including Melanie Griffith, Tippi Hedren, Mr. Blackwell, Esther Williams and composer Jerry Herman. Help wanted: Concordia University is seeking a b-school dean for its new b-school building. Work is under way on the $20 million Education, Business & Technology Center, set to open 12 months from now. The Lutheran university in Irvine is searching for “an academic or business leader” to head the business program, which has doubled enrollment, to nearly 300, in the past five years. Meanwhile, the OC-San Diego chapter of TechNet, the lobbying group for technology companies, is seeking an executive director.
