Cardiac Science Wins Device Pact

Cardiac Science Inc. said Friday that Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has bought more than 150 of its Powerheart G3 automatic defibrillators.

The Irvine-based company originally won a contract with the federal Department of Health’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2002 for its first generation Powerheart defibrillators.

Cardiac Science’s defibrillator devices are used to provide life-saving shocks to people suffering heart attacks.

Earlier this week, Cardiac Science said it won a $500,000 pact with the Army and National Guard to supply Powerheart G3s.

The military branches awarding contracts to Cardiac Science include the Birmingham, Ala.-based Army 81st Regional Support Command and the Army Corps of Engineers in Louisville, Ky.

Cardiac Science also will train more than 2,600 Army personnel to use the defibrillators in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

The device maker agreed in February to combine with Bothell, Wash.-based Quinton Cardiology Systems Inc. Quinton shareholders are set to get about three-quarters of a share in the new company for each share of Quinton stock.

Shareholders of Cardiac Science would get a tenth of a share in the new company for every share of their existing stake.

The new Cardiac Science headquarters will be in Bothell. The company plans to keep research and development operations in Lake Forest.

In June, some shareholders looking to block the combination agreed to give up the fight. In return, Cardiac Science said it would provide more information on its pending deal with Quinton.

Cardiac Science has set an Aug. 31 date for shareholders to vote on the proposed combination. The vote is set to take place at Newport Beach law firm Stradling, Yocca, Carlson & Rauth.

Shares of Cardiac Science were unchanged at $1.08 on Friday.
