Burnett Set to Break Ground on Desert Project

A Costa Mesa developer plans to begin construction within days on a 1,362-home masterplanned community in the desert setting of Cathedral City.

Burnett Cos. plans to build the so-called neo-traditionalist community on 303 acres at the northwest corner of Verona Road and Landau Avenue.

Bart Soli, Burnett’s director of builder sales, defined the community as a clustering of six neighborhoods built with narrow streets, large porches and rear-lot garages served by alleys. The homes will range from $90,000 to $190,000, and lot sizes will vary from 4,000 to 8,000 square feet, Soli said.

The six neighborhoods will be built around a circular green 300 feet in diameter. Ten acres of parks, a community swimming pool and swimming lagoon and a recreation center are planned. Shading the development will be 3,000 Chilean mesquite trees, Soli said.

The project’s proximity to Interstate 10, its price point and pedestrian-oriented design will attract retirees, vacationers looking for a second home and entry-level buyers who work in the Coachella Valley and elsewhere in eastern San Bernardino and Riverside counties, said Steve Johnson, principal with the Corona office of real estate consulting firm The Meyers Group.
