Broadcom Vice President Resigns

A longtime Broadcom Corp. executive who heads the mobile chip group is set to step down next week to take the top post at a privately held startup.

Yossi Cohen was Broadcom’s senior vice president and general manager of the mobile platforms group, which develops chips for cell phones.

The Irvine-based company said the departure was “amicable.”

Cohen declined to name the startup where he’s set to be chief executive officer until the new company makes an announcement, according to Broadcom spokesman Bill Blanning.

Chief Executive Scott McGregor will temporarily take on Cohen’s job until a replacement is found, the company said.

Broadcom said it has launched a search for Cohen’s successor.

Cohen started at Broadcom in 1997.

His other posts include managing the Bluetooth division and Broadcom’s gigabit controller business.

Before Broadcom he held a variety of posts at Santa Clara-based chipmaker National Semiconductor Corp.

Broadcom shares were down about 6% on the news in midday trading on a recent market capitalization of $9.4 billion.
