Broadcom Paying $80M for Chipmaker

Broadcom Corp. is paying $80 million for Sandburst Corp., an Andover, Mass.-based designer of chips for networks run by telecommunications companies.

Irvine-based Broadcom is paying $75 million in cash plus stock for privately held Sandburst. The acquisition is set to close this quarter.

Broadcom said it could record an undetermined charge for research and development expenses at Sandburst.

Sandburst came out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology five years ago and has raised about $70 million in venture financing.
