Broadcom: No Qualcomm Settlement

Broadcom Corp. shot down rumors Tuesday of a settlement to months of legal squabbling over cell phone chip patents between the Irvine chipmaker and rival Qualcomm Inc..

The speculation started when shares of Broadcom and San Diego-based Qualcomm rose slightly on a Deutsche Bank analyst’s report, according to Reuters.

The analyst cited “industry contacts” that said the patent issues were resolved.

“We’re moving forward on our cases against them,” spokesman Bill Blanning told Reuters.

Qualcomm’s lawyer also denied the rumor.

The two companies settled several patent infringement claims in recent months but others are outstanding.

This week, closing arguments are due in Santa Ana on a Broadcom suit against Qualcomm that alleges infringement of three Broadcom patents.

Both companies await word from the International Trade Commission, which is expected to come up with a penalty against Qualcomm after finding last fall that Qualcomm infringed five Broadcom patent claims.

In April Broadcom launched a separate suit that takes aim at Qualcomm’s licensing strategy.

Broadcom charges Qualcomm with unfair business practices, discriminatory licensing and violation of industry standards by concealing its patents.
