Another whopper from the anti-airport group, an Editorial

Here’s another whopper from ETRPA, the group opposing the proposed El Toro airport.

It’s the photo on the left. You’ve probably seen it before. It’s a still shot from an anti-airport commercial that has aired repeatedly; the picture has also appeared in print ads. Besides making El Toro’s eastern runway look a mess, Loma Ridge looms like Everest. The message: an El Toro airport is an accident waiting to happen.

Compare the ETRPA photo with the one on the right, which was taken recently by airport advocate Art Bloomer, retired commander of the El Toro base. The mountains, more than six miles away, appear unthreatening. The runway isn’t nearly as tattered-looking, either.

The difference? Bloomer took his photo at a 50 mm lens setting, the way the eye sees it. ETRPA used a zoom lens, creating an impression of impending doom.

The ETRPA picture works as propaganda. As fact, it doesn’t fly.
