American Vanguard Updates on Storms

Chemical company American Vanguard Corp. said Wednesday its Alabama plant was closed for two weeks after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita but didn’t have a material impact on operations.

American Vanguard said it saw a “minor disruption in its manufacturing and supply” because of the closure of its plant in Axis, Ala., near Mobil.

The Newport Beach-based company said the closure won’t impact third-quarter results due Nov. 7.

American Vanguard sells pesticides, antibiotics, weed killers and other products. Most are older products acquired from big chemical companies.

The Alabama plant was acquired in 2001 from DuPont, doubling American Vanguard’s production capacity.

For the first half, American Vanguard had $78 million in sales, up 18% from a year earlier. Profits were up 26% to nearly $6 million. The company counts a market value of $340 million.
