Sullivan Rejoins Business Journal, Takes on Managing Editor Duties

Jerry Sullivan has rejoined the Orange County Business Journal as managing editor overseeing special reports and helping to produce the weekly newspaper and daily website.

Sullivan said he is excited to return to Orange County and its leading business publication.

“This is another wonderful opportunity to play a part in chronicling the dynamic marketplace of Orange County,” he said. “I look forward to getting reacquainted with the businesses here as they go about the hard work of charting the path of economic recovery in Southern California.”

Sullivan served as a reporter, marketing and media columnist and managing editor of the Business Journal in the 1990s.

He left to become editor of California Apparel News in Los Angeles and went on to start and run the Los Angeles Garment & Citizen, a community newspaper that covered Downtown Los Angeles and its surrounding districts for 10 years before ceasing publication in July.

Sullivan is the recipient of numerous professional awards, including statewide honors for Editorial Comment from the California Newspaper Publishers Association; national recognition for general excellence from New America Media; a Maggie Award and Silver Ozzie for his work as editor of World Trade, a magazine previously in Irvine; and a Best Local Column designation from the Society of Professional Journalists Inland Chapter for earlier work at a daily newspaper.

The Garment & Citizen garnered various other forms of professional recognition. LA Weekly’s annual “Best of L.A.” edition in 2006 named the Garment & Citizen the top source for news about Downtown Los Angeles. Former Los Angeles Police Department Chief William J. Bratton invited Sullivan to read one of his columns to a graduating class of the agency’s training academy in 2008. U.S. Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard submitted Sullivan’s final column for the Garment & Citizen into the Congressional Record earlier this year, along with a tribute to the newspaper for its service to the community.

Sullivan took an active role in the community, serving on the board of directors of the Los Angeles Trade-Technical College Foundation, the Little Tokyo Community Council, and the L.A. Host Lions Club, among others. He received special honors from the Angelus Plaza Senior Activity Center, California Design College, the Textile Association of Los Angeles, former state Sen. Richard Polanco and various other groups and elected officials.

Sullivan also has appeared as an occasional guest on “Off-Ramp” on KPCC 89.3 FM and moderated several discussions for the Zocalo Public Square lecture series. He is a contributing editor to newgeography.com, a website that focuses on demographics, development and politics.

Sullivan is a graduate of Marquette University in Milwaukee, where he earned a bachelor’s in journalism with a minor in philosophy. He also earned a certificate in financial accounting from University of California, Irvine.

Sullivan is married to Lorna Corpus Sullivan, who is an editor at Bon Apetit magazine. The couple lives in the Echo Park district of Los Angeles with plans to relocate to OC.
