Kushner, Spitz Leave Posts at Freedom

Aaron Kushner and Eric Spitz have “resigned Tuesday from all executive duties at Freedom and the Orange County Register,” according to Freedom Communications Holdings Inc., parent company of the Register.

Kushner stepped down as chief executive of Santa Ana-based Freedom.

Spitz, who gave up his title as president, will remain chairman of the company’s board of directors.

Rich Mirman, publisher of Freedom’s flagship Register and its Riverside-based Press-Enterprise, was named the company’s chief executive and president.

Mirman is a Freedom investor and member of its board of directors. He previously served as senior vice president of business development and chief marketing officer at Harrah’s Entertainment in Las Vegas.

Mirman took over day-to-day operations of the Register when he assumed the publisher’s title from Kushner in October. The move came shortly after the Register switched its newspaper delivery service from the Los Angeles Times to a new vendor. The change resulted in missed newspaper deliveries, and a $3.5 million claim from the Times for what it said is an unpaid paper distribution bill.

Kushner and Spitz purchased Freedom in 2012.
