Spanish-Language Papers Editor Exits

Sandra Baltazar Martínez, managing editor of Spanish-language weeklies La Prensa in Riverside and Excélsior in Orange County, left her post to be a writer and editor for University of California-Riverside’s internal communications department, according to news reports. Starting Monday she will write and edit content for the university’s website.

Martinez joined the staff of La Prensa and Excélsior in 2012, when Freedom Communications, the former parent company of the Orange County Register and Riverside Press-Enterprise, owned the weeklies. Denver, Colo.-based Digital First Media acquired Freedom and all of its publications in March as part of a $49.8 million purchase as part of Freedom’s bankruptcy auction.

The Southern California News Group is now seeking a replacement to oversee its three Spanish-language weeklies – La Prensa, Excelsior and Impacto, which have a combined circulation of nearly 400,000, according to a spokesperson.

Digital First Media formed the Southern California News Group after its acquisition. The group operates 11 daily newspapers and associated websites in Southern California.
