Water Treatment Specialist Raises $10M

Irvine-based WaterHealth International Inc. has raised $10 million in venture funding from a private equity firm in New York that targets infrastructure projects in developing nations.

Vital Capital joins an established list of previous backers that includes the International Finance Corp., Dow Chemical Co., Coca-Cola Co., Tata Capital and Irvine-based Sail Capital Partners, among others.

WHI has raised about $25 million to fund its efforts to build hundreds of water purification and disinfection systems in developing countries around the world.

These systems, which are operated and maintained by WHI, are purchased by governments, municipalities, corporations and communities.

The company has developed more than 500 systems in India and sub-Saharan Africa that provide access to clean drinking water access to more than 5 million underserved people.

Vital Capital, which manages a $350 million private equity fund, has targeted Sub-Saharan Africa for investment, as well as education and healthcare initiatives.
