Rivian Details Statewide Cuts

239 roles eliminated in Orange County

Irvine-based Rivian Automotive Inc. (Nasdaq: RIVN) has detailed cuts of 3% to its roughly 14,000 personnel, according to data from the state Employment Development Department.

The layoffs affect 479 roles in Southern and Northern California, with 239 positions eliminated across multiple locations in Orange County and 240 in Palo Alto.

The cuts were expected. CEO of the EV maker, R.J. Scaringe, told employees last month that the company plans to cut another 6% of its workforce, following a round of layoffs the same size last summer, to focus its resources on ramping up vehicle production and reaching profitability. The note did not specify when the layoffs would occur nor which departments would be impacted.

The company missed its production target for 2022, falling around 700 vehicles short of its 25,000 goal. It said it’s is aiming for 50,000 vehicles this year.
