American Vanguard Gets Defoliant From Bayer

Newport Beach-based agriculture products and specialty chemicals maker American Vanguard Corp. acquired the international business of Bayer CropScience’s cotton defoliant tribufos.

Monheim, Germany-based Bayer CropScience is a subgroup of Bayer Corp., a chemical and pharmaceutical company based in Germany.

The purchase by American Vanguard completes a series of acquisitions of Bayer’s domestic tribufos product line that began last July.

American Vanguard expects increased “access to the international cotton market, particularly in the Central and South American regions,” according to a statement by Alfredo Pelaez, director of international sales.

Plans include a push into Brazil’s cotton market, according to the company.

Tribufos is a compound used on leaves of cotton plants in preparation for machine harvesting.

The CropScience brand will join Folex, another tribufos product marketed by American Vanguard.

The company manufactures its tribufos products at its Axis, Ala. plant.
