The University of California, Irvine, said today that research done by its chemistry faculty could lead to the development of an early detection test for prostate cancer.
UCI said in a release that a team led by professor Reginald Penner created a way to clearly identify clinically usable markers for prostate cancer in urine.
Penner said that the goal of the research was to create a device the size of a home pregnancy test that would cost about $10.
“You would buy it at the drugstore or the grocery store and test yourself,” Penner said.
Results of the study were published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
