Elixir MD Targets Faster Post-Op Recovery Time

Elixir MD Inc. in Irvine aims to speed up the recovery process for plastic surgery.

The company’s non-invasive light therapy technology is designed to minimize common post-operative concerns such as inflammation, bruising and swelling.

It’s accelerating growth through new partnerships with aesthetic companies such as Charlotte, North Carolina-based Health/Knowledge/Beauty (H/K/B) Cosmetic Surgery.

“This partnership is an ideal alignment of core operating principles of our respective organizations that recognize that proper evidence-based surgery recovery protocols are foundational to the attainment of desired outcomes and patient satisfaction,” Chief Executive Ewan Mohammed said in a statement.

Through the partnership, Elixir’s technology will be rolled out at H/K/B’s 11 clinics throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

“ELIXIR MD’s exclusive focus on recovery aligns with our commitment to evidence-based protocols and enhances how we support patients beyond the operating room,” said Dr. Gaurav Bharti, co-founder of H/K/B.

The H/K/B partnership builds off momentum from Elixir’s recent global expansion into Mexico, Australia and New Zealand, markets it has identified as areas with high demand for surgical innovation.

Light Therapy Device

Elixir MD employs photobiomodulation, an advanced technology that uses specific light wavelengths to stimulate cellular repair, according to the company.

The company offers tailored treatments before and after surgical procedures, specializing in facial cosmetic surgery.

Its Detox preoperative treatment uses blue light to “cleanse the skin at a cellular level,” reducing bacterial load and risk of postoperative complications, while its post-op Cellular treatment uses yellow light to speed up repair mechanisms deep within the tissue.

The other three light therapy treatments are intended to help with maintenance post-procedure by stimulating collagen and elastin production and mitochondrial activity in cells.

Yassen founded Elixir in 2019 with the purpose of minimizing post-surgical downtime and improving the postoperative experience.

“From my own experience with surgery, I realized we needed a change,” Mohammed said in a statement on the company’s website. “That’s how Elixir MD started—it’s more than just a device; it’s a promise to you for faster healing and a better recovery experience.”

Elixir received 510(k) clearance in 2024 for use in general and plastic surgery, making it the first and only company to receive clearance for an LED light therapy device in the plastic surgery industry, according to Elixir.

Expanding Into High-Growth Markets

Elixir has also been expanding globally.

Last July, the company announced expansion into Mexico through a partnership with plastic surgeons Dr. Leonardo Moreno-Tevizo and Dr. Andrés Bello Margalef.

It’s eyeing Mexico as one of the fastest-growing plastic surgery markets, driven by medical tourism and rising domestic middle-class adoption.

Mexico is considered the third-largest country by volume for plastic surgery procedures globally, behind only the U.S. and Brazil, according to Elixir.

The company estimates that Mexico’s aesthetic medicine market will reach more than $6.1 billion by 2030.

A month later, Elixir announced the formation of a wholly-owned subsidiary in Australia and New Zealand through a partnership with High Tech Medical Pty Ltd.

Similar to Mexico, Australia and New Zealand are on the rise for cosmetic surgery, the company said.

Data from Imarc Group shows that the Australian cosmetic surgery market reached approximately $1.8 billion in 2024 and is expected to grow to $3.9 billion by 2033, with facial cosmetic surgery being the fastest-growing segment.
