Irvine chain, whose parent is The Little Brown Box Pizza, LLC, was considered a pioneer among the assembly-line pizza brands.

The parent company of Irvine-based Pieology Pizzeria, a pioneer in the once fast-growing build-your-own pizza category, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this week.

The Little Brown Box Pizza LLC filed its bankruptcy protection petition in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Central District of California, on Monday evening. The petition was signed by company founder and chairman Carl Chang, who launched the first Pieology outlet in Fullerton near the local university in 2011. It competed with other assembly-line pizza brands such as Blaze Pizza.

The company listed liabilities ranging from over $1 million to $10 million.  It is ranked No. 21 among the largest restaurant chains in Orange County, with 2024 revenue of $101.8 million across 103 stores.
