Olenicoff Up Among Locals on Forbes World’s Billionaires List

All but one of Orange County’s entries slipped in ranking on Forbes’ 2011 list of the world’s billionaires released Wednesday.

Real estate owner Igor Olenicoff was the only one of nine locals to boost his ranking this year.

Olenicoff, founder and president of Newport Beach-based Olen Properties Corp., rose from No. 655 a year ago to No. 459 with a billion-dollar gain in Forbes’ estimate for him.

The magazine put Olenicoff at $2.5 billion, up from $1.5 billion on last year’s list.

The rest of the county’s contingent saw their valuations change slightly or stay the same and slipped in ranking as they failed to keep up with others on the list.

Donald Bren, chairman and owner of Irvine Company, is the highest ranking local on the list again at No. 64, down from No. 45 a year ago.

Bren’s estimate was unchanged at $12 billion.

Jim Jannard, founder of Foothill Ranch-based Oakley Inc., came in at No. 376 at $3 billion, a valuation unchanged from a year ago. His ranking slipped from No. 316 in 2010.

David Sun and John Tu, cofounders and owners of Fountain Valley-based Kingston Technology Co., rank No. 440 on the billionaires list at an estimated $2.6 billion each, up slightly from $2.5 billion a year ago.

They fell from No. 374 a year ago.

Bill Gross, co-chief investment officer at Newport Beach-based Pacific Investment Management Co., ranked No. 564 at an estimated $2.1 billion, up from $2 billion a year ago.

Gross fell from No. 488 a year ago.

Irvine-based Broadcom Corp. cofounder Henry Samueli came in at No. 595 and $2 billion, up from $1.7 billion a year ago.

Samueli slipped from No. 582 last year.

Broadcom cofounder Henry Nicholas ranked No. 692, down from No. 655 a year ago.

Forbes pegged Nicholas at $1.8 billion, up from $1.5 billion in 2010.

Rounding out the locals is businessman George Argyros at No. 736 and $1.7 billion, up from $1.5 billion a year ago.

Argyros fell from No. 655 a year ago.

The world’s richest person, according to Forbes, is Mexican investor Carlo Slim Helu at $74 billion.
