Henry’s Home Stand; McGregor & Son; FCD’s Gender Gap

Did you see Henry Samueli around OC last week? You weren’t alone. One night he was at the Forum for Corporate Directors awards at the Ritz-Carlton, where Broadcom CEO Scott McGregor was among the honorees. The next night he dined at the OC affiliate of the National Human Resources Association’s annual dinner at the Hyatt in Irvine, where Jay Scott of Samueli’s H&S Ventures took a bow. Samueli told the Insider that he also has been keeping up with home games of his Anaheim Ducks, who are on a compressed schedule in this strike-shortened season. The team reeled off three games in four nights at the Honda Center just before Samueli hit the awards circuit …

The FCD event was emceed by Mike Mussallem of heart-valve maker Edwards Lifesciences, which got quite a visit from McGregor awhile back. Seems McGregor’s father is the recipient of one of Edwards’ devices, and he got curious about how those things are made. So he and his boy dropped by Edwards for a tour and a chance to meet—and thank—the workers who made his …

Another FCD honoree was Jacqueline Barton, a director of Dow Chemical who noted that she got her board seat in the 1990s when “they were looking for a woman—because they had to have one.” Notable that three of the five FCD honorees this year were women, including Leslie Stone Heisz and Jacqueline Kosecoff …

The night’s final honoree was Augie Nieto, whose wife, Lynne, got a roar of laughs when she departed from the buttoned-down style of the boardroom to explain that the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis that’s put her husband in a wheelchair robs the body of the use of voluntary muscles but doesn’t affect the involuntary ones. That’s not the funny part. Lynne went to note that Augie is making remarkable progress in his battle with ALS, although he still can’t talk. But, she said, if Augie could talk he’d be the first to let everyone know that the penis is among the involuntary muscles …

Top honors at the NHRA dinner went to Karen Stout of Arbonne International, with Behr Paint’s Richard Maus and Stephenie Goddard of Glidewell Laboratories also getting nods …

Congratulations to Fletcher “Ted” Jones Jr., who tied the knot with 2002 Playmate of the Year Dalene Kurtis on March 2 at the Beverly Hills Hotel …

Word has it that Mark Moshayedi of chipmaker STEC has picked up another piece of the restaurant landscape in Newport Beach with the recent buy of Andy Crean’s Villanova, which reportedly fetched $6.3 million at auction. Now we’ll see if talk of The Winery taking the spot over comes to pass. Folks in the know say Moshayedi also owns the buildings that house Joe’s Crab Shack and the Shamrock Bar to go with the Mariner’s Mile Marine Center …

Being a Forbes and OCBJ rich guy is nice, but Igor Olenicoff has truly arrived. He was a clue in a recent New York Times crossword: “Real-estate mogul Olenicoff.” Answer: IGOR …

Chen up: what else can we say to Vanissa and Jackson Chen, owners of China Moon in Laguna Niguel, named Restaurant of the Year in the recent Fifi’s Best. Our story last week included a misspelling, with Chin instead of Chen—an error that had nothing to do with our fabulous Fifi Chao.
