Santa Ana-based Corinthian Colleges Inc. filed for bankruptcy, the company said.
The company had been winding down its operations—selling or closing campuses—since last June, as part of an agreement with the U.S. Department of Education.
It had about 110 campuses and 70,000 students at that time.
On Monday, April 27, the for-profit schools operator closed its remaining campuses—more than two dozen in all, with more than 10,000 students.
Everest Colleges Canada Inc., its subsidiary in Canada, filed for bankruptcy in February. Canadian regulators had closed its 14 campuses there, affecting about 2,500 students.
It sold 56 campuses to Zenith Education Corp., an affiliate of Oakdale, Minn.-based student loan guarantor agency ECMC Group.
Zenith recently advised Corinthian that three of those campuses hadn’t met the closing conditions of the sale and wouldn’t be acquired, Corinthian said.
