Vanguard Gets $300,000

Vanguard University will open a new science lab this fall, thanks to a $300,000 grant from the Fletcher Jones Foundation.

The award will help support construction of an Outdoor Learning Laboratory in the Natural Sciences Office Quad. The space will feature elements such as an aquaponics area, greenhouse and butterfly conservatory. Its opening is timed to the launch of Vanguard’s Environmental Sciences major.

It’s the third investment in the school by the Pasadena-based foundation. While the name Fletcher Jones brings car dealerships to mind in Southern California, the foundation is named for a different Fletcher Jones, who was a mathematician known for co-founding Computer Sciences Corp., or DXC Technology, in 1959.

The first grant was made in 2006 to help launch its nursing program, and the second established a military veterans scholarship for post-9/11 students who are veterans.
