University of California-Irvine is part of a group that received a five-year, $14.6 million U.S. Dept. of Education grant to improve literacy instruction.
The other recipients are Learning Ovations, a software company in Irvine; Digital Promise, a Washington D.C. nonprofit provider of personalized learning; and MDRC, a New York-based nonprofit social policy group that will evaluate the project’s results.
UCI will be the research lead on the project via its School of Education.
Some 300 schools and 100,000 students in K-3rd grade will be served by the grant and half the schools—many part of Digital Promise’s League of Innovative Schools network—have been identified, a press release said.
The grant is meant, among other goals, to “identify and remove critical barriers” to wider technology-based literacy instruction.”
