LCAD Sets New Writing Programs

Laguna College of Art and Design said it would start two degree programs in creative writing: a Bachelor of Fine Arts in fall 2017 and a low-residency Master of Fine Arts next summer.

The BFA and the MFA programs include emphases in fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Students will explore newer, specialized areas that include graphic novels, podcasting, memoir and game storytelling.

The chair of the BFA and MFA programs in creative writing is Norm Leonard, a screenwriter, children’s book author and publisher. Faculty members include Grant Hier, who co-developed the program as the former chair of the college’s department of Liberal Arts and Art History.

Hier received the Prize Americana for his book-length poem “Untended Garden.”
