OC Unemployment Falls to 3.7% in April

5,000 job increase led by leisure and hospitality sector

Orange County’s unemployment rate fell to 3.7% in April from a revised 3.8% in March and above the 3.4% in April last year, according to the state’s Employment Development Department.

The state’s unemployment rate of 5.0% The U.S.’s was 3.9%.

Nonfarm OC employment increased by 5,000 jobs from March to April when 1.7 million were employed.

Seven of the 11 industry sectors saw job increases.

Leading the job increase was leisure and hospitality sector, which added 3,000 jobs. Four other sectors expanded, including construction, 2,700 jobs.

Government declined the most, 400 jobs.

About 18 million worked in California in April, an increase of 17,700 nonfarm jobs from March and up about 68,000 jobs from a year earlier.

Only five of the 11 industry sectors added jobs month-over-month, led by private education and health services, up 9,400. The biggest decline was professional and business services, down 2,400 jobs.

People receiving unemployment benefits fell by 22,209 to 402,004.
