UCI, Girls Group Go to Camp

University of California-Irvine and Santa Ana nonprofit Global G.L.O.W. will work this summer to help get 50 at-risk middle- and high-school girls succeed in school and move on to college.

The work is between the group and UCI’s Center for Education Partnerships in the form of a week-long residential camp on UCI’s campus—Global G.L.O.W.’s first HerStory Summit.

Global G.L.O.W. is short for Global Girls Leading Our World; it helps girls via mentoring, literacy and art.

Participants sleep in campus dorms; attend storytelling, writing and college prep workshops led by UCI faculty and the group’s staff; attend a networking lunch with professional women; and go on educational outings.

The program is free for eligible students from under-served areas in Southern California that include Santa Ana, Garden Grove and Anaheim.

Global G.L.O.W. and New York nonprofit LitWorld International Inc. started the “HerStory” project in April 2016. The first summit was during the United Nation’s 60th Annual Commission on the Status of Women.
