Sail Capital Taps Former Toronto Mayor for Advisory

Irvine-based Sail Capital Partners has tapped former mayor of Toronto David Miller as a member of its 12-person advisory board.

Sail Capital is a venture capital firm with a focus on clean-technology companies. It looks for investment opportunities here and abroad, including Canada, where it has teamed up with other firms in a number of ventures.

Sail Capital in April rolled out a $100 million joint fund in Canada through its early- and mid-stage investment arm, Sail Venture Partners.

The partnership is with Stifel Nicolaus Canada Inc., a subsidiary of St. Louis-based investment banking firm Stifel Financial Corp.

Sail Capital also is one of the syndicate of investors in the Ontario Emerging Technologies Fund. The fund, which was set up in 2009, has $250 million in capital that’s expected to be disbursed over five years.

Miller currently serves as counsel at Toronto-based law firm Aird & Berlis LLP.

He has served as chair of the C40 Climate Leadership Group while serving as mayor. The group is made up of mayors of 58 major cities around the world, including Los Angeles, Buenos Aires, Cairo and Shanghai.

He is expected to continue to be involved with C40.

Miller has advised a number of organizations since leaving office in 2010, including the World Bank and United Nations environment programs.

“We are very pleased to have such a prominent Canadian share Sail’s vision and support our further growth and investment in Canada,” Sail Capital’s Managing Partner Walter Schindler said.
