The S&P 500 was up 0.63% to 1,649.43 in afternoon trading Tuesday.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.78% to 15,297.81, while the Nasdaq rose 0.78% to 3,479.10.

The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond was up 0.41% to 2.18%.

The price of gold was off 1.21% to $1,366.30 per ounce.


Aliso Viejo-based Microsemi Corp. was up about 2% to $21.91 for a market value of $2.04 billion. The chipmaker announced Tuesday a new semiconductor for use in the industrial, commercial aviation, defense, communications and security industries.


Irvine-based molecular diagnostics specialist CombiMatrix Corp. shares shot up about 18% to $3 for a market value of $10.76 million. The company said it has seen an uptick in prenatal testing six months after two studies were published in the New England Journal of Medicine that validated the company's test offerings.
