The Nasdaq was up 1.72% to 2,902 in midday trading Tuesday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.3% to 12,752.
The S&P 500 was up 1.59% to 1,381.
The yield on a 10-year treasury bond rose 2.73% to 1.62%.
The price of gold was up 1.09% to $1,738 per ounce.
Shares of Irvine-based chipmaker Broadcom Corp. rose about 3% to $31. Broadcom, which had a recent market value of $17.6 billion, announced its wireless technologies are being used for connectivity between the Wii U console and Wii U GamePad controller.
Irvine-based healthcare software maker Quality Systems Inc. was up about 4% to $18 after its subsidiary NextGen Healthcare Information Systems LLC launched its 8 Series Electronic Health Record Content. The company had a market value of $1.1 billion.
Shares of Newport Beach-based patent licensing company Acacia Research Corp. shares were off about 11% to $21 for a market value of $1.1 billion.
Aliso Viejo drug maker Avanir Pharmaceuticals Inc. rose about 12% to $2.50 for a market value of $340 million.
