The S&P 500 fell 0.34% to 1,351.
The yield on a 10-year treasury bond was off 0.50% to 1.58%.
The price of gold was down 0.97% to $1,718 per ounce.
Shares of Santa Ana title insurance company First American Financial Corp. fell about 3% to $22 for a market value of $2.4 billion.
Newport Beach-based specialty chemical maker American Vanguard Corp. shares were off about 4% to $29 to a market value of $814 million. Chemical makers were generally flat to down on Thursday.
Irvine-based laser maker Newport Corp. was down about 4% to $11.51 to a market value of $440 million.
