Extron Opens New HQ in Anaheim

Extron Electronics Inc. recently christened 350,000 square feet of newly built space for its Anaheim headquarters and an East Coast hub in North Carolina, while continuing to hire aggressively nationwide.

The new buildings are part of an aggressive expansion plan aimed at adding hundreds of new employees this year, as well as training and product-demonstration facilities in Dallas, New York, Toronto and elsewhere.

Extron makes audio and video equipment, including control systems, computer-video interfaces, amplifiers, speakers, fiber-optic gear, signal processors, streaming products and classroom sound systems.

“We will continue to hire field support engineers, trainers and field sales staff as fast as we can locate them,” Extron Chief Executive Andrew Edwards wrote in a recent blog post on the company’s website.

The company sells to specialized resellers that install and service professional presentation displays for government agencies, companies and schools. Some of Extron’s roughly 900 products also are used in video production studios and broadcast facilities. The home-theater market represents another niche.

Extron started in 1983 in Garden Grove. It relocated its headquarters to Santa Fe Springs for a few years and then to Anaheim in 1995.

The company’s earliest products helped convert computer images for display via video projectors.

Its new 198,000-square-foot headquarters represents one of the largest North County office projects in years. Construction began in spring 2010 and wrapped up late last year.

The building houses administrative personnel, sales staff and manufacturing operations. It also serves as the company’s global hub for support services and training in the Americas.

Extron seeks to fill dozens of positions in Anaheim in engineering, information technology, international operations, maintenance, manufacturing, sales, distribution, and product and business development.

The company recently moved its East Coast operation into a four-story, 146,000-square-foot building on a 7-acre campus in Raleigh, N.C. The office includes an 8,000-square-foot training and product demonstration space, and expanded areas for sales, manufacturing, and research and development.

Extron is looking to fill dozens of positions there in support services, sales, manufacturing and engineers. That expansion comes on the heels of recently opened offices in London; Paris; Frankfurt, Germany; and Washington, D.C.

Extron added 425 new hires last year and employs more than 2,000 companywide. It also has operations in the Netherlands, Singapore, Japan, China and Dubai.

The Business Journal estimated that Extron had sales of about $150 million in 2010.

The company maintains a low profile in Orange County, and executives declined comment on its latest expansions.

A notable exception on publicity has come with The Ranch Restaurant & Saloon, a 20,000-square-foot that occupies a ground floor space at the company’s headquarters. The restaurant also has a wine cellar and features live country music. It’s billed as a long-time dream of Extron owner Andrew Edwards.
