Manley Rocks Boat; Nicholas Visits Guv; Blum’s New Venture

Here’s a follow up to the loan-gone-awry that landed developer James Baldwin and Broadcom cofounder Henry Nicholas in court. The two have clashed over $15.5 million that Baldwin apparently borrowed from Nicholas, with a 163-foot deluxe yacht called the Triton as collateral. Now Dwight Manley, the man who’s remaking downtown Brea, has added a lawsuit against Baldwin over a $500,000 finder’s fee he says he was promised for playing matchmaker with Nicholas. Manley also says he’s due the use of the yacht and its helicopter for 10 days a year, among other things, and has hired Rutan & Tucker to press his claim …

The Insider hears that Nicholas was in Sacramento last week meeting with Gov. Jerry Brown on education initiatives. Nicholas, who recently received the Keys to the City of Santa Ana for his work at Nicholas Academic Centers, is looking to develop a distance-learning partnership with Oakland Military Institute College Preparatory Academy. Nicholas has known the guv since Brown’s days as mayor of Oakland …

Costa Mesa Mayor Pro Tem Jim Righeimer says his city has the means and the land to hold the campus of OC’s next big tech company, pointing to “hundreds of acres” of farmland owned by the Sakioka family. The Sakiokas have a say in the matter, and until they weigh in the city will have to make due with the nearly 30,000-square-foot office opened last week by TechSpace Inc., which aims to fill it with tech startups and other companies drawn by flexible terms and ready-to-use equipment. The office, located in C.J. Segerstrom & Sons’ California Bank & Trust building on Bristol Street, is TechSpace’s second location in OC, along with its headquarters in Aliso Viejo. Among notables at last week’s grand opening was a well-tanned Scott Blum, who founded and twice sold Buy.com—the second time for $250 million to Japan-based retailer Rakuten—and cofounded TechSpace with CT Realty Investor’s James “Watty” Watson …

90-year-old Laguna Beach resident Arnold Hano’s iconic baseball book, A Day in the Bleachers—which revolves around Willie Mays’ famous over-the-shoulder catch in first game of the 1954 World Series at the Polo Grounds—has been in print continuously for more than 50 years. The Baseball Reliquary in Pasadena did better than that when it gave him its Hilda Award, dedicated to fans who have provided distinguished service to the game, as part of its Shrine of the Eternals 2012 Induction Day earlier this month. It gets better, too, because Hano joins one of the Insider’s all-time favorites, Laguna Hills resident Jennie Reiff, as a Hilda Award recipient …

Very Punny: Tom Dumont of rock band No Doubt has been “instrumental—excuse the pun” for Laguna Hills-based GJ2 Guitars, according to co-owner Jon Gold. Dumont returns the compliment: “We’re collaborating on a new model right now, and what strikes me about him is how far he’ll go to serve the player with the perfect instrument for the job.” Reporter Jane Yu has more on OC’s guitar scene on page 1.
