The Nasdaq was up 0.94% to 2,970.33, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.22% to 12,937.23 in midday trading.

The yield on a 10-year treasury bond was up 2.5% to 1.52%.

Gold prices rose 0.89% to $1,584.80 per ounce.

Orange County’s biggest gainer in midday trading among companies with a market value of $500 million or more was Irvine-based chipmaker Broadcom Corp.

Broadcom’s shares were up 5.81% to $32.40 to a recent market value of about $18 billion.

Shares of Costa Mesa-based Ceradyne Inc. were down 4.39% to $23.32 to a recent market value of about $568 million after an analyst lowered her rating on the company as a result of a weakening solar market and global economy. Ceradyne makes ceramic products for the defense, industrial and commercial markets.

Among OC companies with a market capitalization below $500 million, Huntington Beach-based action sports apparel maker Quiksilver Inc.’s shares were up 9.19% to $2.56. Quiksilver had a recent market value of about $426 million.

Shares of Anaheim-based Willdan Group Inc., with a recent market value of about $11 million, were down 9.64% to $1.50. Willdan provides engineering, security and financial consulting services.
