The S&P 500 fell 0.71% to 1,418 in midday trading Thursday.

The Nasdaq was off 0.77% to 2,991, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.48% to 13,181.

The yield on a 10-year treasury bond rose 1.53% to 1.72%.

The price of gold fell 1.17% to $1,697 per ounce.

Shares of Irvine-based Broadcom Corp. were off about 2% to $34 for a market value of $19 billion. A judge on Thursday ruled that Cupertino-based Apple Inc.’s iPhone infringes on three patents held by Chevy Chase, Md.-based patent licensing company MobileMedia Ideas LLC, which is owned by Sony, MPEG-LA and Nokia. Shares of Apple, which Broadcom counts as its largest customer, were down about 2% on Thursday to a market value of $496 billion.

Broadcom Chief Executive Scott McGregor also recently sold 20,000 shares of the company's stock, priced at $34.20.

Seal Beach-based Clean Energy Fuels Corp. was down about 4% to $13 for a market value of $1.1 billion.
