Retailer Wet Seal Sees Big Nov. Sales Gain

A strong Black Friday helped Foothill Ranch-based mall clothing retailer Wet Seal Inc. report a better-than-expected gain in November sales.

Wet Seal’s sales at stores open for at least a year rose 7% last month compared to a year earlier.

Analysts were expecting a 0.8% gain in same-store sales for the month.

November sales “exceeded our expectations” with clothes that were in demand and Black Friday promotions, Chief Executive Ed Thomas said.

“We are encouraged by our early holiday sales results, which we believe bode well for December sales,” Thomas said.

The company’s dominant Wet Seal chain, which sells clothes for teen girls, saw an 8.3% rise in November same-store sales.

Same-store sales at Arden B., the company’s smaller clothing chain for young women, slipped 0.3% last month.

The company’s total sales for the month rose 14% to $50.7 million, led by a 16.7% rise at Wet Seal and 3.6% growth at Arden B.

Last month, Wet Seal forecast improving sales for the current quarter that runs through January.

The company said it expects quarterly sales of $158 million to $163 million, which would be up as much as 8% from a year earlier.

Wet Seal runs 536 stores across the country.
