It’s Official: Garrett Heading Beckman

It’s official.

Beckman Coulter Inc. appointed Scott Garrett, its president and chief operating officer, as its new chief executive, effective Feb. 21. Garrett succeeds retiring Chief Executive John Wareham, who will continue as chairman until Beckman’s April 7 shareholder meeting.

Garrett’s appointment to head the Fullerton-based medical testing company was widely expected. Beckman had disclosed in regulatory filings that Wareham planned to retire in 2005, but was reticent to give further details. Beckman sells more than $2 billion worth of testing gear to hospitals, medical laboratories and academic research institutions yearly.

Garrett, in a separate action, also was elected to Beckman’s board, bringing the company’s number of directors to 12 from 11.

Garrett joined Beckman in 2002 as the head of its core clinical diagnostics division, which accounts for about two-thirds of the company’s sales. He was promoted to Beckman’s president and COO in 2003.

The executive has more than 25 years of experience in the healthcare industry. Before he came to Beckman, Garrett was chief executive of Garrett Capital Advisors and chief executive for Kendro Laboratory Products LP. Garrett, like several other figures in the Orange County healthcare industry, also has worked for Baxter International Inc., and led the spinout of Baxter’s Dade International unit.
