Tustin’s MillenWorks Acquired by Textron

A local maker of parts for off-road vehicles for racing and the military was scooped up by a unit of Wilmington, Mass.-based Textron Inc. Friday.

Textron Systems, a subsidiary of publicly traded parent Textron, acquired Tustin-based MillenWorks Inc. for undisclosed terms.

MillenWorks sees yearly sales of about $28 million. It’s set to be folded into Textron Marine & Land Systems, a unit of Textron that operates in New Orleans.

It’s unclear if the integration will affect MillenWorks workers locally.

The company operates out of a 75,000-square-foot building here. Roughly half of it is dedicated to manufacturing and testing.

It designs and manufactures highly specialized auto parts that go into unmanned vehicles used by the military. It also makes parts for what’s called lightweight tactical vehicles that are used in combat and places where failures are costly.

“MillenWorks has proven its ability to create high performance, mobile and safe vehicles,” said Tom Walmsley, senior vice president and general manager of Textron Marine & Land Systems. “Behind MillenWorks’ success is a talented team that we look forward to having join our family.”

Textron Marine & Land Systems specializes in making armored combat vehicles and boats.

Textron sees yearly sales of about $10 billion and had a recent market value of $5.3 billion.

MillenWorks has a colorful history—it was founded by New Zealander and off-road race car driver Rod Millen in the 1980s.

He counts numerous awards, records and wins as a rally driver in New Zealand and the U.S.

Millen said on the company’s website that he’s often sought after by advertising agencies who have used his precision driving skills in many automakers’ TV commercials.
