Broadcom Announces LG Deal, Others at CES

Irvine-based chipmaker Broadcom Corp. will power the first 5G Wi-Fi TV from LG Electronics, the company announced this week at the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The LG product, which is expected to increase capacity and range while reducing power, was among several design wins the company disclosed at the world’s largest technology showcase.

Among other development for Broadcom announced at the show:

A deal to have its chips power Comcast’s new cloud-based service, allowing users to access DVR functions in any room.

A deal with Netgear to supply the networking equipment maker with technologies that improves audio and visual connections.

The debut of Broadcom’s first ultra-HD gateway chip for big screens and Internet video delivery. It’s billed to reduce bandwidth by 50% while improving picture quality. The new line of TVs are one of the big CES story lines emanating from CES this week, along with cloud-based services, smart cars and the hybrid smartphone-tablet, dubbed phablets.

Broadcom also landed a deal to power Korea Telecom’s Olleh TV Skylife satellite and IP service. The chips will power the first Android 4.0 set-top box with Google mobile services and applications.
