New Shows Tap Trends

Two new events at Anaheim Convention Center reflect efforts by area tourism marketers to play to the city’s strengths and bring larger or higher-dollar events to the venue.

A 1980s-themed fan fest called NostalgiaCon hits town July 4 weekend this year. Organizers say it includes music, sports and entertainment celebrities, fashion, retro merchandise and other elements to hearken to the Reagan Decade.

The city next year will play host to the International Science & Engineering Fair from May 10 to 15. The event is a science, technology, engineering and math competition considered the ‘Super Bowl’ of STEM.

Both are in developing niches Visit Anaheim, which promotes the area for tourism and business travel, has shown strength in: entertainment, with such events as VidCon, WonderCon, BlizzCon, and others, and more shows in high-dollar industries including technology and medical devices.

Each should bring about 30,000 attendees to the city, show organizers said.
