JWA, Southwest to Add Routes

John Wayne Airport cemented deals for two new round-trip Southwest Airlines routes starting next summer.

Southwest today said it had begun selling tickets for daily nonstop service that begins June 7 between Orange County and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The route is still subject to government approval, the airline said.

Southwest also said it would begin nonstop service between Austin, Texas, and Orange County on June 28.

Airport spokesperson Jenny Wedge said the facility was pleased with new routes, “whether for work or play.”

She said the airport still wants “more flights between OC and Mexico” and has the capacity for adding them. Mexico-based airline Volaris is a possible provider of those flights but has not announced its plans, she said.

She said the Austin route complements current nonstop routes from Orange County to Houston and to Dallas.

Southwest said their June and July 2015 schedules were the largest in the company’s history, with as many as 3,800 flights per day across their system.
