Irvine Software Maker eEye Digital Moves HQ to Phoenix

Irvine’s eEye Digital Security Inc., a maker of security software, is set to move its headquarters to Arizona, according to reports.

The new office is set to be the company’s hub for marketing, administration and sales, according a report in the Phoenix Business Journal.

A small research and development office is set to stay in Irvine.

EEye’s flagship product, Retina, scans corporate networks for vulnerable spots and makes sure they stay in compliance with security regulations.

The company has moved some 10 workers to Arizona and is looking to hire another 15 there. The site has space for another 50 workers, which eEye is looking to hire by the end of next year.

The company also has offices in Germany and Britain.

EEye was started in 1998 by a half dozen former employees from Phoenix’s NetPro Computing Inc.

NetPro was acquired by Aliso Viejo’s Quest Software Inc. in 2008 for $79 million.

Earlier this month, eEye brought back founder Mark Maiffret, who left two years ago, as chief technology officer.

Maiffret has a colorful history.

He started eEye at age 17 after becoming infamous for his Microsoft hacking skills, finding weak spots in the software kingpin’s products.

He later became a security expert and testified in front of Congress.

Privately held eEye doesn’t disclose financials.

It’s backed by New York’s Insight Venture Partners and Bessemer Venture Partners.
