Irvine-based Broadcom Corp. has made an investment in a San Jose startup maker of processor chips for servers as part of a $25 million round of funding.
Broadcom invested in Tilera Corp. and named one of its executives to the startup’s board.
Nariman Yousefi, Broadcom’s senior vice president of infrastructure technologies, now is a Tilera director.
Broadcom joined returning investors Quanta Computer Inc. of Taiwan and Japan’s NTT Corp. in the funding round.
How much each company invested wasn’t disclosed.
Tilera got its start in 2004 and makes powerful processors that run servers.
Tilera’s chips combine several processors and grew out of research done at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and funded by federal government’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
Last month, Broadcom said it was taking part in a $3.5 billion, two-year effort by Intel Corp. to invest in startups and spur new hiring.
Broadcom makes chips for servers, networking gear and consumer electronics.
