UCI MIND

WHY: Heads UCI’s Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders (MIND), Orange County’s only state and federally funded Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, funded through the National Institute on Aging and founded in 1995. Conducts research on cognitive impairments, performs clinical trials on promising treatments and provides training on brain aging and neurodegeneration. Served as professor at UCI’s School of Medicine and School of Biological Sciences.

FUTURE PLANS: Launched UCI MIND Joan and Don Beall Scholar Award, a $50,000 award to support an early career researcher leading a program that will help discover solutions to memory-impacted diseases. The Beall family created the award after increasing their yearly donations to the institute from around $30,000 to $100,000.

IN THEIR WORDS: “We’re so grateful that many people around Orange County provide philanthropic support—it’s not only key to our educational endeavors but our research mission as well. Philanthropic support of research truly accelerates the rate of discovery.”
