UCI Announces Corporate Counsel College as Business Journal Lauds Local Lawyers

The University of California, Irvine, plans to start a Corporate Counsel College at its law school, an announcement that came during the Orange County Business Journal’s General Counsel awards dinner last night.

The program will offer courses for lawyers moving from private practice to corporate duties, as well as advanced training for current corporate lawyers.

Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the UCI Law School, announced the new program while serving as master of ceremonies for the 3rd Annual General Counsel Awards, held at the Hyatt Regency Irvine.

“I think this can be one of the signature programs of UCI’s law school,” Chemerinsky said.

A crowd of nearly 500 members of the local corporate and legal communities gathered for the General Counsel Awards, which honored five attorneys in three categories: Public Company, Private Company, and Rising Star.

The honorees, selected from a field of 33 nominees, included:

Michael Ray, senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of Western Digital Corp., in the Public Company category.

Tania King, general counsel, secretary, and ethics and compliance officer & Secretary of Advantage Sales & Marketing Inc., in the Private Company category.

David Harshman, vice president, general counsel and secretary of Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., also in the Private Company category.

Jerry Huang, vice president and general counsel of Vizio Inc., as a Rising Star.

Jason Weintraub, of Taco Bell Corp., also as a Rising Star.

The Business Journal will profile the honorees in our issue of Oct. 1.
